Broadband Statistics
- The $70 billion dollars private companies invested in North American communications infrastructure is more than three times the annual investment in the original interstate highway program and seven times the annual investment in the Apollo space program. The private sector and public policy environment mean big changes, big dollars and big gains for the American people
- A 7% increase in U.S. broadband adoption could create 2.4 million American jobs, reports Connected Nation. How’s that for an offset to the stories coming out of Wall Street?
- This same 7% increase can generate $134 billion in annual economic stimulus. That’s every year.
- This 7% increase also means a decrease of about 6.4 billion annual vehicle miles saved through increased telecommuting, adding up to a savings of 3.5 billion pounds of CO2 emissions. That’s good for our health, good for our stress levels, good for the environment and good for our wallets.
- Look to new healthcare technologies for even more savings: this same 7% increase in adoption turns into $662 million dollars in annual healthcare savings thanks to broadband-enabled services and advances. Remote monitoring means less travel, improved services and better health.
- Revenue in the U.S. VoIP industry is set to grow by 24% this year, to $3.19 billion. Subscriber growth will drive this revenue, with numbers expected to rise by 21% to 16.6 million.
- Almost 60% of households in the US have internet access via PC, fixed, broadband and mobile phones. Lines are blurring between big and small service providers, and that’s good news for rural America.
- Over 542 million hosts are connected to the internet in 2008, thirteen times more than 1999. Over half have a domain of .com or .net.
- Traditional behaviors continue to change at a rapid pace. Daily activities, including mailing, making phone calls, shopping, banking, playing music, games and video are increasingly being done online. Add to this the list of online activities, including social networking, instant messaging, texting and browsing, and you can see where the amount of time using broadband technologies is increasing significantly.
The statistics are impressive.
